Automatic determination of Ionic balance in seawater, brines and salt

The aim is to set up a fully automated system to monitor the main inorganic components in brine for the production of salt extracted from the sea by solar evaporation.

Brine management is critical for controlling and maintaining the quality of brine at each stage of production. The first stage is to prepare fully saturated brine using evaporation pond; the second one is to crystallize sodium chloride out of fully saturated brine using crystallizer ponds. Finally, the salt is harvested and washed to produce the final product.

The Metrohm ion chromatography system allows calculating the ionic balance automatically which provides a high level of confidence on the simultaneous analysis of anions and cations.

Samples

The samples were kindly provided by a sea salt production facility in Australia.
